Children’s Minister Job Description

Position Summary:

The Children’s Minister provides visionary leadership and oversight for children’s ministry at Surrey Hills Baptist Church (kindergarten through 6th grade). Surrey Hills Baptist Church offers children’s programming for one service and Sunday School on Sunday mornings plus Wednesday evening activities. The Children’s Minister provides leadership, training, and oversight to all children’s ministry volunteers, serving under the supervision of the Personnel Committee. This part-time role (20 hours per week) is responsible for implementing and developing programming for the spiritual formation of children and equipping parents to fulfill their calling as the primary spiritual leaders of their children.

Qualifications:

· Spiritual Foundation:

o Fully devoted follower of Christ who believes in the inerrant Word of God and has a passion for teaching children and their families the authority and truth of God’s Word

o Born again Christian who feels a call by God into ministry

o Active and growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ as evidenced by action, attitude, and behavior

· Ministry Experience & Skills:

o Genuine love for children and families with a passion for seeing families grow in their faith together

o Previous experience directing a children’s ministry, including leadership of volunteer ministry staff and/or a volunteer team

o Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through

o Proven ability to cast vision, inspire volunteers, and build collaborative teams

o Demonstrated ability to understand and relate to children and their families across diverse backgrounds and experiences

· Personal Qualities:

o Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic ministry environments

o Strong emotional intelligence with demonstrated conflict resolution capabilities

o Reliable, self-motivated, and able to take initiative

o Collaborative approach with ability to build consensus and maintain healthy relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and volunteers

Responsibilities:

· Programming & Curriculum:

o Oversee all programming for children ages kindergarten through 6th grade, including Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, summer programming, VBS, and special outreach events

o Evaluate, choose, and prepare curriculum for each program and age level

o Create environments, activities, and programming that facilitate learning and encourage spiritual growth

o Maintain a strategy for reaching and assimilating new children and families

· Volunteer Leadership:

o Recruit, train, schedule, and lead teams of volunteers

o Provide regular leadership, training, and appreciation for all children’s ministry volunteers

o Ensure a safe environment for all children by ensuring that all volunteers have cleared a background check before they are permitted to interact with children

o Develop and maintain safe, clean, aesthetic childhood learning environments

o Oversee check-in procedures and track weekly attendance

· Pastoral Care:

o Provide pastoral care for children and families, meeting them where they are when extra support is needed including but not limited to hospital visits, follow-up after incidents or experiences at church-related events, and ongoing relational shepherding that extends beyond scheduled ministry hours

o Equip parents to fulfill their calling as the primary spiritual leaders of their children

· Administration & Team Collaboration:

o Manage all children’s ministry budget line items

o Work in close association with the pastor, other staff members, and the church council to discuss ministry strategy and effectiveness

o Work in close association with King’s Gate Christian School director and teachers

o Oversee childcare for ages K-6 for all church events, as needed

o Lead one’s own family, students in the ministry, and adult volunteers to participate in the life of the church family (worship, service, fellowships, missions, giving, etc.)

o Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous improvement, such as participation in Oklahoma Baptist’s Children Ministry Association

o Fully embrace the mission, vision, and values of Surrey Hills Baptist Church

Preferred Qualifications:

· Education degree or related field

· Minimum of 2-3 years of experience leading children’s ministry

· Experience managing volunteer teams of 10+ volunteers

· Evidence of relational warmth, energy, and enthusiasm in ministry contexts

· Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities with strong problem-solving and adaptability
